The World Series of Poker will finally be heading North of the Border, Canada! A WSOP circuit event will be held at the River Rock Casino and Resort in Richmond British Columbia from October 27 to November 7, 2012 during this 9th season. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming commission (OLG) sure shook up Ontario citizens today, especially those in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Ontario Provincial Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced that in co-ordination with the OLG, the GTA will have its own casino by 2017. OLG chair Paul Godfrey will be restructuring the OLG in a good way by improving how lottery and gaming are delivered in Ontario. This new enterprise will create around 2,300 net new industry jobs and about 4,000 jobs in the service sector. The OLG will also plan to introduce online gambling including online poker much like the other provinces of the Canadian Poker Network Espace Jeux and PlayNow of Quebec and British Columbia.

No location has been announced yet but the usual list of potential locations for the Toronto Casino include; Canadian National Exhibition (CNE where current temporary casino is held), Woodbine Racetracks, Man-made island in Lake Ontario (Harbourfront), Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga.

In 5 years GTA poker players will no longer have to travel to Port Perry, Niagara Falls, Brantford, Sarnia, Orillia, Windsor, or Thousand Islands to play poker in Ontario. Eric Place wins 2010 BC Poker Championships

Eric Place of Halifax Nova Scotia is the new 2010 BC Poker Championship main event winner. On Sunday Nov 28 2010 Eric took home the grand prize of $300,000 as he bested over 550 other players to take the crown. Second place went to Connor Allisen of Vancouver, and third went to Benjamin Leblond from Wakefield Quebec. This $2700 main event at the River Rock casino in Richmond BC attracted other big name pros including Brad “Yukon” Booth, Gavin Smith, Greg “FBT” Mueller, Terrence “Unassigned” Chan, and November Nine memeber Matt Jarvis who just missed out on a final table.

2011 Fallsview Poker Classic

The 2011 Fallsview Poker Classic has officially been announced kicking off the 2011 tournament series in Canada. The 2011 Fallsview Poker Classic will run January 6-11, 2011 at the Fallsview casino in Niagara Falls Ontario. Once again there will be 3 events, a $1000 buyin, a $2500, and a $5000 buyin. The 2010 Fallsview Poker Classic was pretty much dominated by poker pros Gavin Smith and Simon Charette. Satellites will begin October 25, 2010 in the form of winner take all single table sit n goes. $120 buyin for the $1000 event, $275 for the $2500 event, and a $550 for the $5000 event. There is also a $70 sub-satellite to qualify for the $550 main event sat. New for 2011 there will also be super satellites. On January 5 at 4pm there is a super sat for the $1k event, Jan 7 for the $2,500 event, and Jan 9 for the $5,000 event. Buyin amounts are the same as the single table sats.

2010 BC Poker Championships

The 2010 British Columbia Poker Championships (BCPC) have officially been announced and once again will take place at the River Rock Casino in Richmond BC. Historically this tournament has been one of the biggest poker tournaments in Canada with a 2 million dollar prize pool and many popular poker pros invading Vancouver for this event including Daniel Negreanu who was the 2008 BCPC champion and took home $371,910.

Here is the official 2010 BCPC schedule:

New Brunswick’s first casino opened in Moncton on Tuesday May 4, a big boost for this eastern province. Casino New Brunswick, built near the Magnetic Hill tourist attraction will feature 500 slot machines, 22 table games and a poker room with eight tables. But even after a day there is already controversy building within the poker room. Players will only be allowed to speak in English, something that is common to most poker rooms outside of France and Quebec, due to unfair advantages that may come between two or more colluding players if others cannot understand what is spoken between the parties.

The $90-million New Brunswick gaming complex includes a casino, hotel, spa and convention centre and is expected to attract more than 600,000 visitors a year and estimated over $50 million profit. In comparison the Nova Scotia casinos do between $80 to $100 million in profits.
