Ontario Provincial Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced that in co-ordination with the OLG, the GTA will have its own casino by 2017. OLG chair Paul Godfrey will be restructuring the OLG in a good way by improving how lottery and gaming are delivered in Ontario. This new enterprise will create around 2,300 net new industry jobs and about 4,000 jobs in the service sector.  The OLG will also plan to introduce online gambling including online poker much like the other provinces of the Canadian Poker Network Espace Jeux and PlayNow of Quebec and British Columbia.

No location has been announced yet but the usual list of potential locations for the Toronto Casino include; Canadian National Exhibition (CNE where current temporary casino is held), Woodbine Racetracks, Man-made island in Lake Ontario (Harbourfront), Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga.

In 5 years GTA poker players will no longer have to travel to Port Perry, Niagara Falls, Brantford, Sarnia, Orillia, Windsor, or Thousand Islands to play poker in Ontario.  With a megacity like Toronto with a casino, it will be just a matter of time before the biggest of online poker tournaments such as the WPT, WSOP, or even smaller ones such as the CPT, HPT or DSPT come to the Tdot for a mega Toronto Poker Tournament.

The film repeats at midnight on November 2 and Sunday November 6 at 11 pm.

Grinders - World Broadcast Premiere
Wednesday November 2, 2011 at 9 pm ET
75 minutes
Produced by Border City Pictures in Association with TVO

Here is a quick synopsis about the poker film Grinders:

With a new baby and wife to support, out-of-work filmmaker Matt Gallagher (The Rise and Fall of Grumpy Burger) tries his hand – and some would say “luck” – at playing poker for a living. Grinders is the director’s inside journey into the unconventional, often bizarre, underground world of illegal poker clubs. It’s a world populated by colourful characters, straight out of central casting. A world where the workday starts at midnight, runs strictly on cash, and can change forever with the simple flip of a card.

Playing poker to pay the bills means living side by side with risk. But, as Matt soon discovers, the real meaning of risk lies far outside the poker room – and can strike in the most personal way. Matt’s intimate, first-person narrative is joined by the voices of other grinders with stories that range from tales of ultimate success to personal disaster.

WPT returning to Canada .. Not https://www.canadapokernews.com/poker-in-canada/wpt-returning-to-canada/ https://www.canadapokernews.com/poker-in-canada/wpt-returning-to-canada/#comments Tue, 26 Jul 2011 00:56:39 +0000 https://www.canadapokernews.com/?p=552 edit: Party Poker has removed this from their events page.  Looks like it was a premature listing which may not even happen anymore.

Straight from the Events calender on Party Poker, the owner of the World Poker Tour (WPT), listed for the confirmed schedule for the World Poker Tour Season 10 is the return of the WPT North American Poker Championships. (NAPC) Taking place at the Fallsview Casino and Resort in Niagara Falls, this event will run from October 10-22, 2011.  With this event spanning over 13 days, it looks very promising to be an actual tournament series like the Fallsview Poker Classic.  Rumours of an eventual WPT return to Niagara or even Canada have always been premature, but this looks like it could be true.  Though it is not listed on the current WPT website.

Satellites for the WPT North American Poker Classic should be running soon on Party Poker.  More WPT Niagara news will be posted as they become available.

Remember Party Poker still has rake free poker tournaments for another 2 weeks.  Sign up today and receive a $600 bonus!

Ontario joins the online gambling craze https://www.canadapokernews.com/canada-poker/ontario-joins-the-online-gambling-craze/ https://www.canadapokernews.com/canada-poker/ontario-joins-the-online-gambling-craze/#comments Tue, 10 Aug 2010 22:10:43 +0000 https://www.canadapokernews.com/?p=202 To follow in the footsteps of BC, the Atlantic provinces, and Quebec, Ontario will now enter the online gambling foray. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced today that Ontario will spent the next 18 months looking at how to implement the program, which will launch sometime in 2012. From the looks of things this will also include Ontario online poker.

Canadians wager over a billion dollars annually through online gaming sites and the Ontario government believe that opening up an online casino will bring in over $100 million annually. The OLG will be taking the reigns on this project and hopefully they won’t act as slow as they have been known for.

“Across Canada and around the world, online commerce is part of our everyday lives and OLG is excited to start the consultation process for online gambling and growing its marketplace in the future,” OLG chairman Paul Godfrey said.

One thing is for sure, online poker in ontario will surely be easier to win at than the $50 million lotto max that has teased Canadians in 2010.
