World Series of Poker Canada https://www.canadapokernews.com/poker-in-canada/world-series-of-poker-canada/ https://www.canadapokernews.com/poker-in-canada/world-series-of-poker-canada/#comments Fri, 10 Aug 2012 03:58:46 +0000 https://www.canadapokernews.com/?p=730

The World Series of Poker will finally be heading North of the Border, Canada!  A WSOP circuit event will be held at the River Rock Casino and Resort in Richmond British Columbia from October 27 to November 7, 2012 during this 9th season.  WSOP Canada 2012 will be the first time that a WSOP circuit event will be held outside the United States.  This is some fantastic news for poker tournament enthusiasts after hearing the big news that the World Poker Tour (WPT) will be coming back to Canada.

With 12 events in 12 days the action will be hot and heavy.  Event 1 starts off with a $345 2 day event, and the series ends with Event 12 a $345 Omaha and Holdem 1 day mixed event.  Event #7 is the main event, a 5 day (3 day 1s) $1,650 buyin event starting on Friday November 2.  Players will start with 20,000 chips, with the structure remaining the same as other WSOP circuit main events.

All these WSOP Canada events are Ring events, so winners will take home a WSOP ring for their winning efforts.  Win the WSOP Canada main event, and you will also gain entry into the National Championship, where a gold bracelet will be on the line as well as $1,000,000 prize pool in which you will be freerolled into.  Next year’s 2013 WSOP National Championship will take place May 21-23, 2013 in New Orleans.

There will also be 2 online events yet to be scheduled as part of the WSOP Canada circuit. These online events will be ring events and will be played on PlayNow.com, the BC Lottery’s gaming site. For now only B.C. residents may play on PlayNow.com, but hopefully there will be an exception for these 2 wsop events so that all Canadians have a chance to win a WSOP ring online.

There is no word on satellites to WSOP Canada events yet.

More details to follow.

Arrests made in Jonathan Duhamel Robbery https://www.canadapokernews.com/cdn-players/arrests-made-in-jonathan-duhamel-robbery/ https://www.canadapokernews.com/cdn-players/arrests-made-in-jonathan-duhamel-robbery/#comments Fri, 30 Dec 2011 16:09:00 +0000 https://www.canadapokernews.com/?p=623 Just before Christmas, 2010 World Series of Poker champion Jonathan Duhamel was the victim of a home invasion robbery.  He was beaten up and amongst the items stolen from his home included his WSOP bracelet (worth around $50,000), his Rolex watch ( a present from Poker Stars worth around $20,000), and some Euro cash.

On December 24, a 20 year old female was arrested, along with 2 other men, and one other man was arrested on Dec 29.  The 20 year old female, Bianca Rojas-Latraverse, was in fact Duhamel’s ex-girlfriend!  Since everything was targeted, and the beating of Jonathan made it look personal, it makes absolute sense.  She must have been scorned with his recent wealth, and probably left her with what she deserves, nothing.

It is not known if Dumahel’s reward of up to $10,000 played a part in the arrests.  His Rolex watch was recovered, but the WSOP bracelet is still MIA.

Canadians in the 2011 WSOP https://www.canadapokernews.com/cdn-players/canadians-in-the-2011-wsop/ https://www.canadapokernews.com/cdn-players/canadians-in-the-2011-wsop/#comments Sun, 19 Jun 2011 14:04:25 +0000 https://www.canadapokernews.com/?p=522 Summer is almost here, but the WSOP doesn’t wait for summer to arrive before getting started.  The 2011 WSOP started on a sour note on the heels of “black friday” but this did not stop players from across the world to begin their trek in Las Vegas with their ultimate goal in winning a world series of poker bracelet.

Canadians will once again try to dominate the WSOP, headed last year by main event winner Jonathon Duhamel.

Tyler Bonkowski of Regina Saskatchewan has lead the charge becoming the first Canadian to win a WSOP bracelet in 2011.  By taking down event #14 the $3000 Limit Hold’em event, Tyler took home a hard earned $220,817, the largest cash of his career.

Mark Radoja of Guelph Ontario has won Canada’s second bracelet in Event #24, the $5000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout.  Mark bested 386 opponents to take home $436,538, also the biggest cash in his career, and his 9th career WSOP cash.

Daniel Idema from British Columbia has just made it back to back bracelet wins for Canadians by shipping Event #27, the $10,000 Limit Hold’em event for a $378,472 earning.  This is definately his marquee event as he narrowly missed winning a bracelet in the same event last year losing headsup.

Kirk Caldwell from Orangeville Ontario became the biggest Canadian winner so far taking home $668,276 for his win in event #32, the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em. With 2,828 entries and an overall prizepool of $3,817,800 this was a huge event. Not too bad for a guy who won a private home game satellite in the Orangeville Poker Tour for $150. Event #32 was special for Canada Poker as 4 Canadians made the final table! Canadians came 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 10th.

Shawn Buchanan just missed out on Canada’s 5th bracelet, losing heads-up to Frenchman Fabrice Soulier in the $10k H.O.R.S.E Championship.

Matt Jarvis has gone from November Nine member to bracelet winner! Matt beat out a strong field to win Event #40 the $5,000 NLHE 6max event and becomes the first Canadian to win over a million dollars in the 2011 WSOP by shipping $1,045,743 and the bracelet.

A bracelet near miss for Simon Charette finishing 2nd in Event #48, the $1,500 NLHE event. No WSOP for Simon but $404,235 should cheer him up.

Another near bracelet miss, this time Michael Yee places 2nd in Event #51 $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better game. He took home $165,346 as a consolation prize.

With the World Series of Poker (WSOP) only days away, this is a very popular time for Canadians to make their way to Las Vegas and jump into the massive pool of tournament action.  Along with the WSOP at the Rio, there is also the Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza, Caesar’s Palace Mega Stack Series, Wynn Poker Classic, Golden Nugget Grand Series, plus a few other smaller poker tournament series.  Now if you are lucky enough to cash in any of these tournaments, you will most likely be subject to a 30% withholding tax.  The minimum amount cashed before a withholding tax is applied to differs from casino to casino, so it is best to check with the pit bosses before you start playing.

Though all is not lost in regards to the 30% gambling withholding tax.  A company called RMS (previously Refund Management Systems) can assist you in the recovery of taxes on US gaming wins.  They are the most reputable casino and gaming tax recovery service in the industry.  Headquartered in Toronto, and with additional offices in Vancouver and Las Vegas, the staff of qualified accountants will help you get your money back!

You can claim your withheld taxes back on various casino games such as Slot machines, Poker Tournaments, Blackjack Tournaments, Dog and Horse Racing, Keno, plus other jackpot wins.  Also non casino activities such as Lotteries and Game show wins can be reclaimed.

John Racener finishes in 2nd place and earns $5,545,955

Heads up play took 43 hands before Duhamel polished off the short stacked John Racener facing a 6-1 chip deficit. He was only able to double up once off the chip stack with pocket Queens.  The final hand came down to Duhamel shoving allin preflop with AJo.  Racener was pretty much forced to call with K8s.  The flop came out 9d4d4c giving Racener a flush draw to go along with his live cards.  Turn came a 6c, and the exciting river came a dud in the form of a 5c.  Duhamel was swarmed by a sea fans wearing Montreal Canadians jerseys, throwing him up in the air while chanting the Bell Center favourite Ole Ole Ole Ole!

The new World Series of Poker Champion from Canada is a Poker Stars Pro, and PokerStars now has 6 of the last 8 wsop champions in their roster.  Moneymaker, Raymer, Hachem, Eastgate, Cada, and now Duhamel
